Within this objective we aim to minimise the time spent by the fee earning staff in the preparation of the practice for approval and to minimise the time taken in the assessment process. The professional management by Helmsmen of the process of preparation for the assessment: minimises the involvement of the fee earning staff in the Lexcel approval process, thus reducing any loss of fee income, ensures that the most effective route to compliance is followed, through our knowledge of the standards, ensures a thorough preparation for the assessment, which minimises the duration and thus the disruption and cost of the assessment. During an initial meeting, which is free and without obligation, we will assess the amount of work necessary to bring the practice to the Lexcel standard. From this a proposal will be prepared detailing the number of days of our time needed and a firm price for that work, based upon our daily rate at that time. At this stage the timing of the work programme will also be agreed and, if required, we can indicate the other costs, the registration fee and the assessment fee that will be incurred in obtaining the Lexcel Award. Lexcel Experience Helmsmen were one of the first consultancies to attend The Law Society's Lexcel training courses when the award scheme was announced in May 1998. We have assisted or are assisting more than forty clients in their preparation for the Lexcel Award. Our programme of preparation for the assessment is now proven with the success of both our local authority and private practice clients in achieving the Award. The Lexcel Award benefits any size of practice and we have been involved in a wide range of sizes of practice, from a practice with a sole principal plus secretary through to a practice with 22 partners and 110 staff.
